“Revivre”
30 years of reconstructive surgery in Benin
On Thursday, May 23, 2024 – International Day for the Elimination of Obstetric Fistula – we will officially launch “Revivre” and celebrate Dr. Charles-Henry Rochat’s 30 years of work at Hôpital Saint Jean de Dieu de Tanguiéta in Benin. His meeting with Brother Florent, his unparalleled dedication and hard work have had a significant impact on the lives of many women, transforming their suffering into hope and opportunities to live life to the full.
“Revivre” is a poignant testimony to Dr. Rochat’s commitment to the fight against obstetric fistula in Benin.
Accompanied by photographs by Nicolas Cleuet, it offers a deeply human look at the challenges and triumphs faced by women suffering from this devastating condition:
Eradicating a taboo disease
″Like those who have undergone traditional genital mutilation, women with obstetric fistulas number in the millions. For the latter, exclusion and stigmatization are extreme because they are malodorous, infertile and shameful. Sometimes they are even cursed, which puts a definitive end to any empathy. I quickly realized the importance of caring for these women – we had to attack the problem at its roots, by devising a complete model of care, including treatment and improvement of the care system, training of caregivers and research, awareness-raising, prevention and reintegration of patients. Everything had to be done to restore their dignity.″
We look forward to seeing many of you at this event – an opportunity to celebrate the courage and resilience of women with obstetric fistula, and to pay tribute to those who dedicate their lives to improving the health and well-being of vulnerable communities.
The Fistula Group Program of the Fondation Genevoise pour la Formation et la Recherche Médicales (GFMER) and the Genolier Foundation invite you to the vernissage of the book “Revivre”.
